Best Dog Brush For Golden Retriever
So you’re looking for the best dog brush for your golden retriever? This blog will outline tools, grooming kits, and the best brush for golden retrievers.
Grooming is really important for the golden retriever, especially with such a beautiful coat. But, it will come with challenges. Retrievers have two layers of fur coats.
One on top is called the guard coat and another (softer) layer underneath is called the undercoat. The guard goat literally is a “guard coat.” It is meant to repel water and guards your pooch against everything: debris, dirt, and harmful UV rays.
The undercoat is softer, lighter, and shorter than the guard coat. It’s more of an insulator and keeps your Golden Retriever warm in the winter. One thing we know is grooming tools. So here are a few recommendations along with some of our favorite tools.

Chris Christensen Coral Slicker Brush | Chris Christensen A5III Slicker | Andis Steel Greyhound Comb |
---|---|---|
Incredibly efficient at removing mats and comfortable for your dog. This slicker is considered the absolute best by every groomer I've met (including me). | The A5III is a more affordable version of our #1 pick, but missing a few features. The pins are not as flexible and more prone to causing brush burn. | A long-pin steel comb is a perfect (and inexpensive) tool for removing deep tangles that a slicker can't reach. We recommend using this comb in combination with a slicker brush. |

What to know when brushing
The guard coat tangles and tends to get dirty, and the undercoat sheds! How to solve it?
The usual method is bathing and brushing but with tools to help.
A rule of thumb to stick to brushing every day would be perfect, but less than once every three days is just fine.
How to brush your golden retriever like a professional?
Your Golden might have really rough tangles. If so, you can start off by giving them a bath with a lot of detangling shampoo and conditioner. After the bath and while still damp you can try brushing.
You should start off with a great slicker, and use it through the entire coat. Put a lot of care into the areas that will usually tangle- like the behind, mane, and neck.
But don’t go brush over the same place more than 3 times, as it can cause brush burn.
Once you’ve dealt with all the surface shedding, move on to a long pin brush, to reach deep into the coat and remove tangles a slicker brush won’t reach.
Brush for your Puppy
Grooming your puppy not only makes him feel good but it’s an important part of your relationship.
When grooming your Golden Retriever, you are not only keeping his coat, skin, feet, and teeth healthy, but you are becoming accustomed to his body so that you’ll notice early on if anything out of the ordinary is needed for veterinary attention.
Golden retrievers love to explore their territory. Combined with an appetite for play and you’ll get a very dirty dog. Their long hair will get tangled, and if left ungroomed, it will turn into mats. Also, it will turn into shedding.
